Each winter, Rotary Clubs invite local schools to enter teams for a public speaking competition. In the last two years, The Forest School, Easthampstead Park School, Luckley House School, Yateley Manor School and Sandhurst School have entered teams in the under 14s and the Senior section.

Sandhurst School’s Senior team did extremely well last year’s competition, winning the local , the zone and then the district final, only to be beaten in the regional final by a much older team.

This year it has been the Junior team from Yateley Manor School with their chosen topic “Why gun control is out of control”. On the 8th March they won the district final and are going forward to the regional final later in March in Maidstone.

These young pupils choose their own topic, write the speech and the speaker has the support of a chairperson and another pupil who gives a vote of thanks.

To present to an audience means overcoming nerves, practice and to rely on their memory. These presentations look good on their CVs . They have represented their Schools and built up their self confidence.

Youth Speaks, Young Musician and Young Writer and Young Chef are all activities promoted and financed by Rotary
